Universal Phone Numbers FAQ

What is a Universal Phone Number?
With your Lingo digital phone service, you can select the option to have a Universal Telephone Number, or a number without geographic boundaries. This phone number is your permanent phone number and will work wherever you set up your Lingo service - allowing you to make and receive phone calls almost anywhere in the world. Lingo has phone numbers available across the United States and in several international countries.

All Lingo phone numbers are Universal Numbers. Lingo allows customers to choose a number in their own area code, in another state and even outside the country! Depending on the number you choose, your friends and family in the US or other countries can call you at local charges.

How do I Get a Universal Number?

How do Universal Numbers Work?
Your Lingo service routes all calls to your Universal Numbers to the same Lingo phone line. This means you can use the same phone for all your universal numbers. Plus, you can set up distinctive rings via your online account management tool that will let you know which number is ringing.

How do I dial calls from my Lingo phone?
Lingo offers 7 digit dialing in select states, which means you only need to dial 7 digits to call numbers within your area code if you live in those states. For long distance calls you simply dial 10 digits (area code + phone number). We know it’s hard to break old habits though, so if you’re used to 10 or 11 digit dialing, you can keep on doing it without making any changes to your Lingo digital phone service.

When I choose a Universal Phone Number, will calls that I make to that regional calling area be local calls?
With Lingo digital phone service, the concept of local calling doesn’t really matter like regular phone service. The important part is whether the area you are calling is included in the subscription plan, not where it’s physically located. For people with traditional phone service who call your Lingo number, the important part is whether the number they are dialing is in their “rate center” or local calling area.

Example 1: You have the Lingo World Max plan and live in New York City, but your Universal Number has a San Diego (619) area code. Your calls to anywhere in the US are included because you are on the Lingo World Max Plan. Any person in the same 619 calling area who calls you is only charged for a local call.

Example 2: You have the Hello America Unlimited plan with a primary Universal Number from Los Angeles and a second Universal Number from Tokyo. People from Tokyo who call your Tokyo Lingo number will not pay international fees. Your calls to Tokyo will be charged per minute as that country is not included in the Hello America Unlimited Plan.
